Running a Benefit Calculation

Running a benefit calculation leads to calculation results that are then displayed on-screen inside DB Precision. The results include not only the item that was requested to be calculated, but also includes any other related items that needed to be calculated.

Running a benefit calculation is done for an individual and not for a group and is primarily used as a means to check the calculations and plan setup.

To run a benefit calculation for a Person, do the following:

  • Open the Person
  • Open the Calculate Screen: press the Calc button on the Home tab.
  • Specify Calculation Inputs and Press OK: select the item you want to calculate. The first item listed is the Benefit Payment Set which is the set of all benefits payable under the plan. For detailed instructions on this screen, click here. If there is any type of projection, you need make sure that you specify projection assumptions.
Checking Calculation Results

After DB Precision is finished calculating, the Calculation Results screen shows a full detail of what was calculated.

For Formula Derived Items that are calculated, if you double-click on an item, you can then toggle between the underlying formula and underlying values.

Scan the results for things that seem unreasonable or even use a calculator to see if you agree with items such as service or average earnings. If you agree with the results, you generally need to do something with the results outside of DB Precision. This is called an export.

Sometimes, when calculating a Service Definition, the item you requested does not appear, but other items and Service Definitions may appear. This indicates that the person was never eligible to accrue service for the selected Service Definition.
